Pectus Carinatum Treatment with the Wenlin Procedure

In pectus carinatum, the breastbone and the surrounding cartilage structures protrude forward. Besides the height of the protrusion, its flexibility, symmetry and relationship with the rest of the rib cage also influence the treatment decision. The Wenlin procedure is one of the methods we consider in selected patients for whom surgical treatment is being considered.

How the Wenlin procedure is performed

In the method described by Dr. Wenlin Wang and his team, shaped bars are placed in front of the chest wall. Pressure is applied to the protruding area to reshape the chest wall. The number and position of the bars and any additional corrections are evaluated according to the patient’s structure.

Orthosis treatment and the decision for surgery

In flexible pectus carinatum deformities, an orthosis (brace) is an important non-surgical treatment option. Before discussing surgical methods, we evaluate the patient’s suitability for an orthosis and, if there was a previous attempt, how it was applied.

A stiff chest wall, a complex deformity or insufficient improvement despite appropriate treatment may bring surgical evaluation onto the agenda. A decision for surgery is not made on age or photographs alone.

The difference between Wenlin and Abramson

Both methods use bars placed in front of the chest wall. In the Wenlin description, there are differences in the bar arrangement, fixation and the way the chest wall is shaped. If sunken areas accompany the protrusion, using different methods together may also be considered.

Dr. Hasan Ersöz and the Guangzhou experience

In July 2026, I visited Dr. Wenlin Wang’s center in Guangzhou and learned the Wenlin procedure directly from him. I take this knowledge into account, together with my existing chest wall surgery experience, when deciding which method suits the patient.

Recovery and follow-up

The post-operative process is planned according to the scope of the correction performed. At follow-up, wound healing, the position of the bars, pain and the shape of the chest wall are evaluated. Return to work, school and sports, and the timing of bar removal, are determined individually.

Before surgery, infection, bleeding, pain, the bar being noticeable or shifting, insufficient correction and the possibility of a repeat procedure are discussed. If more than one method will be used, the risks of the additional procedures are also explained.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Wenlin procedure suitable for every carinatum patient?

The same method is not recommended for every patient. Especially in flexible deformities, the non-surgical orthosis option is considered. If surgery is needed, the appropriate approach is determined by the structure of the chest wall.

Can it be used for protrusions at the edge of the ribs?

It has been described as usable in selected cases of protrusion at the rib margin. In these situations, known as rib flare, treatment options are compared after examining the source of the protrusion and any accompanying deformities.

How is the cost of the Wenlin operation determined?

A personal offer is prepared after evaluating the need for bars, additional corrections and hospital services. It is not possible to give a single price valid for all patients before an examination.

Apply for an evaluation

To discuss treatment options, you can contact Dr. Pectus Clinic in Izmir. For patients applying from other cities or from abroad, a preliminary consultation and the sharing of the necessary documents are organized. The exact treatment plan is determined after the examination and tests have been evaluated.
